The Upside of Flab

Bummed about losing your girlish figure?  Me too.  Here’s an excerpt from The Inland Ice,  a short story collection by the wonderful Irish writer Eilis Ni Dhuibhne.

 Woman, strawberry and hat

“Older women are the women for me. They are, of course, more flabby. But I prefer flab to anorexia with its inevitable accompaniments — frigidity and a large gang of friends.  With flab comes sexual maturity, lust, and not more but certainly equally important, vulnerability. “

I wish more men felt this way. Actually I think older men do, because I don’t get any complaints and I am on the fleshy side, though I’m not flabby I don’t think.

If I try to see this from the standpoint of this writer’s male character I have to say it’s a perfect description of – um – a friend. :O)

As a senior guy, I agree with this writer. A lot of older women just don’t get it or else they were skinny to begin with. Older women look better with a little meat on their bones. Skinny old ladies look like they’ve been in a concentration camp. I like this blog, by the way, even though its for women.
